Biography

Founded in New York by Sonic Youth bass player Kim Gordon and former Pussy Galore guitarist Julie Cafritz, Free Kitten announced their arrival with a series of singles, including a version of X-Ray Spex’s ‘Oh Bondage, Up Yours’. These were later collected on Free Kitten. The duo’s brand of angry, ‘post-punk’ music was more forcibly unveiled on Call Now, a six-track set issued on Sonic Youth’s Ecstatic Peace label. Elements of both musicians’ antecedents were present, notably on the extended ‘Falling Backwards’. Buoyed by the addition of Mark Ibold (bass) and Yoshimi (drums, trumpet, harmonica), Free Kitten undertook a UK tour to promote Nice Ass, on which the experimental nature of the group’s music was placed within a more disciplined, rock-based structure. Sentimental Education was equally diverse, with the title track proving to be particularly challenging listening.
