Biography
28 May 1939, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. In the mid-50s the soulful singer formed the Rookies, who recorded ‘Money, Money, Money’ on Federal. North later became a demo singer (often singing country songs) for a Nashville publisher. In 1959, under the future hit producer Billy Sherrill, he recorded a single on Sam Phillips’ Phillips label. North’s record ‘Okay, So What’, on University in 1960, led to his appearing on Bandstand, but no hit resulted. In 1962 he moved to Capitol and two years later recorded on Ric Records. In the mid-60s he joined Nashboro working in their stockroom. This led to his recording on their A-Bet label in 1968 where he released his debut, The Magnetic North. In 1970 he moved to the Nashboro-distributed Mankind label and, produced by owner producer/songwriter Jerry Williams Jnr.
