Biography
Formed in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the original idea behind Freakwater arose from informal country jams improvised in a basement by Janet Beveridge Bean (10 February 1964, Bartow, Florida, USA), who is also drummer for Eleventh Dream Day, and Catherine Irwin (b. 4 March 1962, New Haven, Connecticut, USA). When Bean moved to Chicago they kept their songwriting partnership alive by singing to each other over the telephone. Beans stay in Chicago was beneficial, however, as it was here she met bass player Dave Gay. It was at this point the trio (augmented by guitar player Bob Egan and other musicians as necessary) began to record for the first time. Early critical comparisons to the Carter Family ensued, with the central duos songwriting evoking a similar sense of innocence, albeit in a much more contemporaneous vein.
