Biography
USA. Educated at De Paul University, Illinois, Catalano began making a name for himself while playing in Chicago as a tenor saxophonist with many interesting things to say. He has played with several distinguished leaders, including Louie Bellson, Charles Earland, Von Freeman, Jimmy McGriff, David Sanborn, Lonnie Smith, Ira Sullivan and Clark Terry. He has also appeared with singers Tony Bennett and Peter Opisko. On Catalanos recording sessions as leader he has been joined by artists such as Randy Brecker and Chicago stalwarts, Willie Pickens (piano), Larry Gray (bass) and Joel Spencer (drums), the latter noted for his driving big band work with Chicago rehearsal bands. A vigorous player, with an exuberant post-bop style, Catalano is also a more than capable ballad player. His thoughtful readings on some numbers, allied to a warm and resonant sound, come as a refreshing change from the all-stops-out inclinations of some of his contemporaries.
