Biography

Emerging from Texas in the early years of the new millennium, this US quartet creates instrumental post-rock music that is the equal in ambition and scope of recordings by the more widely known Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Mogwai.

Midland, Texas natives Michael James (bass), Munaf Rayani (guitar) and Mark Smith (guitar) first met up in Austin in the late 90s, and their plans for a band came to fruition in 1999 when they met drummer Chris Hrasky (Illinois, USA). The quartet initially played under the moniker Breaker Morant and made their recording debut in July 1999 for college radio station KVRX’s Local Live show. The track ‘Remember Me As A Time Of Day’ later appeared on a compilation released by the station. The quartet subsequently changed their name to Explosions In The Sky, a moniker that was allegedly inspired by a remark made by Hrasky about the noise of fireworks downtown on the night the band recorded their first...
