Biography

Commissioned by the Chicago Cultural Center and the Jazz Institute, this group was formed in 2005 by cornetist Rob Mazurek to perform at the city’s Millennium Park concert hall. The concept was to provide a platform for Chicago’s avant garde jazz and contemporary improvising musicians. The usual instrumentation of the orchestra included two cornets, flügelhorn, trombone, bass clarinet, two flutes, synthesizer, guitar, two basses, various percussion instruments and voices. In addition to the instruments Mazurek brings in recordings of natural sounds, as well as incorporating electronically produced elements. Among musicians who have played in the ESO with Mazurek are Jason Adasiewicz, Jason Ajemian, Jim Baker, Matt Bauder, Josh Berman, Jeb Bishop, David Boykin, John Herndon, Matt Lux, John McEntire, Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Mike Reed, Ken Vandermark and Corey Wilkes.
