Biography

Evan Shaw Parker, 5 April 1944, Bristol, England. Soprano and tenor saxophonist Parker has one of the most awesome techniques in any field of music. When playing solo he combines circular breathing, multiphonics and tonguing tricks to build up complex, contrapuntal masses of sound that are credible only to those who have heard him live and can testify that there is no overdubbing involved. (However, with his 1991 album, Process And Reality, he began to experiment with multi-tracking techniques, but not simply to mimic his solo feats: the overdubbed tracks found him producing more lyrical, though equally complex interweaving lines.) He is also to be heard from time to time in conventional big band contexts (such as Orchestra UK led by Kenny Wheeler at the start of the 90s) and at all points between there and total abstract improvisation.
