Biography
Irene Gibbons, 22 January 1895, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, d. 31 October 1977, Mineola, New York, USA. On stage from the age of three, Taylor had toured the Antipodes and Europe before her teens. In 1921 she settled in New York and married the band leader, pianist and composer Clarence Williams. She pursued a prolific career in musical theatre, recording and especially appearing on radio until 1942, when she virtually retired, although she made a few European appearances in the late 60s and 70s. Taylor’s singing lacked much jazz or blues feeling; it seems likely that her husband’s position as ‘race’ records manager for OKeh Records accounts for the frequency with which Taylor recorded. Not surprisingly, it was often a Clarence Williams composition that was selected.
