Biography

Formed in Glasgow, Scotland, Eugenius were led by Eugene Kelly, who had previously been part of the Vaselines, who were hailed as influential after their demise. On the other hand Kelly described them as ‘a bunch of drunken, useless, awful idiots’. That did not stop Kurt Cobain of Nirvana praising the Vaselines and Kelly’s subsequent bands. Two years after their break-up, a promoter invited Kelly to support the Lemonheads, even though he didn’t have a band at that time. He borrowed Gordon Keen (guitar) from BMX Bandits, James from the Vaselines and Brendan O’Hare from Teenage Fanclub to play the gig. The quartet wrote a couple of songs together and called themselves Captain America. Despite being only a half-hearted exercise, word quickly spread.
