Biography
2 November 1953, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Decidedly modern in outlook and approach, alto and tenor saxophonist Dawkins is a past president of the AACM and much of his work is suffused with this organizations influence. Nevertheless, in his playing Dawkins consistently displays an affinity with the blues. It is this quality which contributes towards making Dawkins music somewhat more readily accessible to the wider audience than that of the AACM. His New Horizons Ensemble, a latter-day group formed in 1979 by Dawkins, Ameen Muhammad, Ben Israel and Reggie Nicholson Dawkins, is vital, exuberant and rich with the multiple influences that mark his musical interests. Among many artists with whom Dawkins has performed and recorded are percussionist Kahil ElZabar, guitarist Jeff Parker and trombonist Steve Berry.
