20 August 1939, Trieste, Italy. Ravas mother was a classical pianist, but he began on trombone in bands playing New Orleans jazz and then graduated to trumpet. He studied with Carmine Caruso in New York and joined Gato Barbieris quintet in 1964. Between 1965 and 1968 he toured with Steve Lacy, then left to join trombonist Roswell Rudd, with whom he worked until 1972 (also fitting in stints with the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association and Bill Dixon). Later in the 70s he worked with Abdullah Ibrahim, Giorgio Gaslini and the Globe Unity Orchestra amongst others. In 1975, he formed a group with guitarist John Abercrombie and has led his own groups ever since (Rudd played in his quartet in 1978-79). In 1980, Rava collaborated with classical composer Morton Feldman and visual artist Michelangelo Pistoletto for a project in Atlanta, Georgia.
