Biography
A German band founded in 1969, Embryo have been among Europes greatest pioneers of world music in a career that has matched longevity with innovation. Based in Munich, the band was originally considered part of what has been jingoistically called Krautrock, employing a variety of improvised jazz techniques as well as studio sound effects. The line-up on the bands first album, the 1970 progressive rock classic Opal, comprised Christian Burchard (drums/vocals), Ralph Fischer (bass/vocals), Edgar Hofmann (saxophone/flute) and John Kelly (guitar/vocals). Embryos immersion into world music was precipitated by an invitation from the German Embassy to tour North Africa.
