Biography

Los Angeles, California, USA. This singer-songwriter released a series of excellent independent albums in the late 90s and early 00s. Mandell played classical violin as a child but as a teenager took inspiration from listening to beatnik songwriter Tom Waits and LA punk band X. Although she dabbled in songwriting and performing as a student, Mandell spent the best part of a decade holding down a series of mundane day jobs, which at one point included a spell in her father’s dentistry office. A friendship with singer-songwriter Chuck E. Weiss inspired Mandell to begin recording her own songs. The self-financed 1998 debut Wishbone established her musical blueprint, mixing torchy cabaret with alt pop to create a suitably noirish ambience for her tales of characters from the wrong side of the tracks.
