Originating from Brighton, England, this all-female indie rock outfit was formed in 1998 when Verity Susman (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Emma Gaze (drums) began rehearsing together. An early version of Electrelane began performing locally, and it was during this time that the band developed something that eventually became one of their musical trademarks - their songs were largely instrumental, and when they did include vocals, the lyrics were sung in foreign languages. Gradually, a more set supporting cast was assembled around Susman and Gaze, including Debbie Ball (guitar) and Rachel Dalley (bass), and three promising singles followed in 2000, ‘Film Music’, ‘Le Song’, and ‘Gabriel’. This led to a distribution contract with the 3MV company, which would oversee Electrelane’s newly formed label, Let’s Rock! Records.
