Jaime Meline, 2 March 1975, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. As a member of Company Flow, alongside Mr. Len and Bigg Jus, El-P aka El Producto created hip-hop that was gritty and paranoid and dismissive of mainstream agendas. Although the producer now says that the Funcrusher EP (1995) and its subsequent extension Funcrusher Plus became like monsters, Company Flow provided a potent counterpoint to mainstream hip-hop aesthetics. With Company Flows relationship with their label, Rawkus Records, deteriorating, El-P formed his own Def Jux imprint (later renamed Definitive Jux, at the behest of Def Jam Records) releasing the last El-P/Bigg Jus/Mr. Len collaborative recordings alongside music by Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, RJD2 and Mr. Lif. The debut album from Cannibal Ox, The Cold Vein, was possibly the most evocative and inventive debut hip-hop album since Public Enemys Yo! Bum Rush The Show.
