Biography
Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the eclectic Either/Orchestra was founded in the mid-80s by tenor saxophonist Russ Gershon. A ten-piece, seven-horn group that crosses the sound of a big band with the adventurousness of a small combo, members have included guitarists John Dirac and Jerry Deupree, bass players Larry Roland and Bob Nieske, drummers Syd Smart and Matt Wilson, keyboard players John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin And Wood) and Ken Freundlich, and brass players John Carlson, Curtis Hasselbring, Russ Jewell, Charlie Kohlhase and Tom Halter, the only member, besides Gershon, who has played with the group since its inception. Gershon founded Accurate Records in 1987, on which the Either/Orchestra have released several wonderfully inventive albums drawing on a vast range of material, including selections from the songbooks of Duke Ellington, Gigi Gryce, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, John Lennon and Burt Bacharach, alongside band members...
