Biography

Edward Haydn Higgins, 21 February 1932, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. After studying privately, with his mother, and at university, Higgins played piano in Chicago nightspots. Sometimes he led his own trio but he also played with a wide range of artists including Georg Brunis, Al Grey, Coleman Hawkins, Freddie Hubbard and Ira Sullivan. Higgins held a residency at Chicago’s prestigious London House for 12 years then moved to Florida where he continued to lead small bands. By the late 90s, Higgins was dividing his time between residencies at Cape Cod and in Fort Lauderdale. Although his repertoire is eclectic, Higgins’ style bears the unmistakable print of an artist maturing in the bop era. His elegant and eloquent touch serves him well as a soloist and as a sympathetic accompanist. He sometimes works with his wife, the singer Meredith D’Ambrosio.
