Biography

Donald Irwin Robertson, 5 December 1922, Peking, China. Robertson’s father was head of the Department of Medicine at Peking Union Medical College, his mother was a pianist and poet. She encouraged his interest in music and he played piano from the age of four, and composed from seven. In Chicago, he played piano in dance bands from around 1936 and was a pre-medical student at the University of Chicago (to which his father had moved) from 1939-43 and a music student at the city’s Music College, 1941-43. His love for music outweighed his medical ambitions and he became a skilled pianist and arranger, and also played organ and brass instruments. His piano style was picked up by the very influential Floyd Cramer who would be later credited with originating the style.

From the mid-40s, Robertson lived in Los Angeles where he accompanied the Dinning Sisters, and in the early 50s was rehearsal pianist at Capitol Records. He co-wrote...
