Biography

This Portland, Oregon-based avant folk band is primarily the focal point for the songwriting of poet Al James. Originally from the small town of Silverton, Oregon, James recorded a number of home demos in the late 90s featuring his plaintive vocals and restrained acoustic guitar. Local keyboard player Jay Clarke joined him for live work and together the duo recorded the Sudden Oak EP. They became something of a fixture on the local art house scene, playing their own sets or accompanying at poetry readings. Drummer Ben Nugent fleshed out the line-up during this period, but the additional instrumentation did little to alter the sound of James’ restrained indie folk musings. Dolorean made their album debut in November 2003 with the release of Not Exotic, which had actually been recorded the previous summer with the help of producer Jeff Saltzman.
