New York City, New York, USA. Powell began playing guitar as a small child and by his mid-teenage years he was attracting attention through live performances and also on many recording dates. At the age of 20 he became musical director for Wilson Pickett. This experience enhanced not only his playing skills but also his reputation and he was hired along with several other session players to form a band, Change, to accompany an as-yet-unknown singer, Luther Vandross, on a tour of Italy. This was followed by a spell as musical director for the B.B. & Q. Band. Powells star continued to rise within the industry and he was hired for numerous sessions with pop, soul and jazz artists such as George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, McCoy Tyner and Dionne Warwick.
