Coming from the tough west side of Chicago, Illinois, USA, Do Or Die comprises brothers AK (Dennis Round) and N.A.R.D. (b. Anthony Round), and their lifelong friend, Belo Zero (b. Darnell Smith). Deciding to form a rap outfit in the early 90s, the trio slowly built a following on the strength of local live performances. It was through one of these local shows that Do Or Die caught the ear of Rap-A-Lot Records head Carlton Joshua, but before the trio signed a recording contract with the label, they issued a single, ‘Po Pimpin’, on their own. The track, which featured fellow Chicago rapper Twista, immediately caused a buzz within the rap underground, and crossed over and began scaling the US Billboard pop singles chart, just missing the Top 20 in 1996. Figuring if they could obtain this much commercial success on their own, a contract with an established label could only help their cause, the trio finally took the plunge and signed with Rap-A-Lot.
