12 August 1928, Solag, Armenia. Musically inclined from an early age Gasparyan became proficient on duduk, which is a flute-like instrument made from the root of the apricot tree. In the late 40s he became a member of the Tatool Altounian National Song And Dance Ensemble and also performed with the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite this, Gasparyan built his extensive repertoire upon Armenian folk music and his own songs that follow this tradition. As a soloist he has built a considerable following in Armenia and Iran.
Gasparyan tours internationally and his playing has been heard on the soundtrack of films such as The Last Temptation Of Christ (1988) and The Russia House (1990). Several of his soundtrack performances have been released on CD. He has performed with Hossein Alizadeh, Michael Brook, Peter Gabriel, Boris Grebenshikov, the Kronos Quartet, Lionel Richie, Derek Sherinian, Sting and Andreas Vollenweider. In 2002, Gasparyan...
