Led by the provocative Chrissie Amphlett (Christina Amphlett, 25 October 1960, Geelong, Australia), whose songwriting with guitarist Mark McEntee (b. Australia) formed the basis of the band, this Australian unit recorded some excellent work in a career spanning over 15 years. Amphletts sexy image complemented the mesmerizing urgency of the music, and the band was guaranteed the audiences undivided attention. Amphlett, who had previously worked with country rock band One Ton Gypsy, met McEntee in Sydney in early 1980, and the duo began working as the Divinyls shortly afterwards. They were joined by a number of local musicians, including former Air Supply bass player Jeremy Paul. Their first mini-album was written for the 1982 movie Monkey Grip; it produced the Australian Top 10 single Boys In Town as well as the excellent ballad Only The Lonely.
