This American boy/girl vocal duo was formed in 1961 by Dick St. John Gostine (Richard Gostine, 1944, Santa Monica, California, USA, d. 27 December 2003, Los Angeles, California, USA) and Dee Dee Sperling (b. Mary Sperling, 1945, Santa Monica, California, USA) while they were at a local high school. The Gostine-written The Mountains High was originally released on the small local label Lama, but was picked up by Liberty Records and became a US hit. Gostine had already made some solo recordings for the label. The fact that they were still at college while this happened precluded touring, however. Visually, the duo dressed as high school kids for an end of term prom, and remained highly popular in the US for several years. They switched to Warner Brothers Records in 1962, and had several more hits before fading out of fashion in the mid-60s.
