Diana Fluck, 23 October 1931, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, d. 4 May 1984, Windsor, Berkshire, England. Dors started out in showbusiness at the age of 13 and was in films from 1946, playing bit parts in a number of good British films of the period. Although studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and a capable straight actress, her overt sexuality, in both her physical appearance and exaggerated mannerisms, propelled her into a succession of inferior films. She was allowed to prove her acting abilities in 1956’s Yield To The Night (US title: Blonde Sinner). Based upon the case of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be executed for murder in the UK, this film took what was for its time a hard look at capital punishment and Dors delivered a striking performance. In its closing sequences no concessions were made to either the fate of or the decidedly unglamorous appearance of the central character.
