1982, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. This Virginia-based singer-songwriter began to gain good notices in the early 00s with a string of accomplished albums. Sproule was born in Canada but moved to the USA at an early age, and grew up surrounded by music and musicians on a commune in rural Virginia. She was playing guitar and performing in public by her late teens, and released an independent album (billed as Devon) in 2000. Although the self-penned material was raw and at times callow there was ample evidence of an emerging songwriting talent and a gifted guitarist. The follow-up, Long Sleeve Story, featured fuller backing and drifted firmly towards alternative pop, albeit with mixed results.
