11 November 1953, Stockton, California, USA. Born into a musical family, Henson-Conant began playing piano at the age of three but although showing signs of being a gifted improviser she refused to take lessons. After other instruments were thrust upon her, in the hope of persuading her to study, at 12 the harp was suggested. This too was rejected but when she was 18 she took another look at the instrument and realised that this was the one for her. She had already begun composing music and during the next few years she developed quickly as both performer and composer. Her studies took her to the University of California at both Los Angeles and Berkeley, where she studied classical harp. This led to engagements with chamber music groups and with symphony orchestras. She supported herself playing gigs in the San Francisco Bay area and later did the same in New York City and Boston.
