Biography
3 September 1968, Hato Rey, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Starting out as a percussionist in a Latin band with his brother, Sanchez took up the saxophone at the age of 12. By the time he was 15 he had begun taking the tenor saxophone more seriously and was also hearing jazz, on record, and liking it. He listened to Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. When Sanchez was 16 he visited New York on holiday, buying more records, and eventually reached a standard in his own playing to allow him to join Kenny Burrells quartet. From there he moved to Dizzy Gillespies small group, then his big band. Sanchezs Latin music background, which includes working with musicians such as Claudio Roditi, Charlie Sepulveda and Eddie Palmieri, allied to the Latin-influenced jazz of Gillespie, has ensured that this young musician has been able to retain the musical traditions of his national heritage and to incorporate them with insight and...
