Although better recalled for his partnership with Isaac Hayes, Porter had been an active, if unsuccessful, performer prior to their meeting, recording for several labels including Savoy Records and Hi Records. The singer was also present on several early Stax Records sessions. Porter first encountered his future colleague when he tried to sell Hayes life insurance, but the pair soon combined in one of the 60s soul eras most electric songwriting teams. Rightly applauded for their songs for Sam And Dave, including Hold On Im Comin, Soul Man and When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, the duo also provided hits for Carla Thomas (B-A-B-Y) and Johnnie Taylor (I Had A Dream).
