Biography

2 August 1961, Miami, Florida, USA. Binney was raised in Ventura, California, and began playing saxophone at an early age. He studied at the Grove School and at the LA Jazz Workshop. Although concentrating on alto, he also became highly proficient on the soprano and tenor saxophones. In 1981 he relocated to New York City where he studied with George Coleman, Dave Liebman and Phil Woods. In 1991 Binney toured the USA, Europe and Canada with Cecil McBee, and repeated the experience every year through to the end of the century. During the 90s, he also appeared with Uri Caine’s Mahler Project (appearing on Gustav Mahler In Toblach), the Gil Evans Orchestra, Aretha Franklin (at Carnegie Hall in 1996), Matthew Garrison, David Gilmore, Drew Gress’ Jagged Sky, Medeski, Martin And Wood (playing on It's A Jungle In Here), Virgil Moorfield, Maceo Parker, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Previte’s Horse, the Edward Simon Group, Maria Schneider, Marvin ‘Smitty’...
