Biography

David Michael Stryker, 30 March 1957, Omaha, Nebraska, USA. At the age of 10, Stryker began playing guitar, an instrument upon which he was largely self taught although he did study in Los Angeles with Billy Rogers at the end of the 70s. Two years after starting to play, Stryker had performed with local rock bands, but by the mid-80s, having relocated to New York, he had developed into an effective, blues-influenced jazz player. He joined a band led by Brother Jack McDuff, that had a regular gig at Dude’s Lounge in Harlem, and he played and sometimes toured with this band for two years. He was heard by Stanley Turrentine, who hired him for his band. Stryker remained with Turrentine until the mid-90s, playing international festivals, concert and clubs dates, and also appeared on record. He has also performed, and sometimes recorded, with Mulgrew Miller, Steve Slagle, Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith, Billy Hart, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Joey DeFrancesco,...
