Biography
7 February 1929, London, England. In the years following World War II, Shepherd took up the clarinet and quickly developed into one of the UKs most respected and admired musicians. An eclectic performer, ranging from dixieland through most aspects of the mainstream to the fringes of bop, he has played with many British and American musicians. These include artists as diverse as Freddy Randall and Billie Holiday. Despite a short spell in the USA in the mid-50s and appearances at international festivals, Shepherds career has centred on the UK and he works regularly with the Pizza Express All Stars, with Digby Fairweather, Roy Williams, Len Skeat and others. A superbly professional musician, Shepherds ability to recreate the immaculate styling of Benny Goodman has led to an unfair tendency to narrow the focus of critical attention.
