Biography

10 March 1971, Cairo, Georgia, USA. With his roots in the farming communities of rural Georgia, Singletary’s first musical influence came from his parents and grandparents who all performed in a gospel quartet. However, he was converted to the cause of country music by the voice of George Jones on local radio and by the late 80s he elected to pursue a professional career as a honky tonk singer. He travelled to Nashville in 1990 where he performed in numerous talent shows and open microphone events attempting to gain attention. However, his big break actually came as the result of attending a Randy Travis show in Louisville, Kentucky, where Travis’ wife and manager, Lib Hatcher, was also in attendance. They were impressed enough by the demo tape he submitted to pass it on to a management company, through which Singletary signed with Giant Records in 1994.
