Darrell Lemont Grant, 30 May 1962, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Grant was raised in Denver, Colorado, and from an early age studied classical and jazz piano. As a youth he toured jazz festivals with the Pearl Street Jazz Band and at 17 took up a scholarship at the Eastman School of Music where he was awarded a BM in Piano Performance. He also attended the University of Miami before coming to New York, where he played with noted musicians including Woody Shaw, Junior Cook and Charlie Persip, and was also involved with the M-Base project. In 1986 his band, Current Events, had a brief recording contract with a major label and in 1988 he joined Betty Carter, becoming one of a succession of fine pianists whose talents were honed in the divas service. In addition to touring with Carter, he also worked with Tony Williams, Donald Byrd, Roy Haynes and Chico Freeman. He also played with Greg Osby, appearing on 1993s 3-D Lifestyles.
