Michael Hampton, 1967, Orlando, Florida, USA. ‘I started DJing because I wanted to change the music I was listening to’, says the ‘godfather of bass’, Magic Mike. Inspired by P-funk and early Prince, Magic Mike began DJing and selling mix tapes at the age of 12 and had his own radio show two years later. Brewing breakbeats, rude words and filthier rhythms, Magic Mike’s intentions were (according to The Face magazine) to ‘release the rumb-wobbling booty shaker inside everyone’. His debut album of electro -descended, party-orientated rap, D.J. Magic Mike And The Royal Posse, has sold over a million copies. Although Hampton graciously admits such phenomenal sales were a fluke, the DJ clearly understood the appeal of gynaecologically-obsessed raps and bass pumped out of car speakers the size of coffins.
