Biography
USA. Gooding was one of a number of New York-based folk artists to begin their recording careers in the early 50s with the newly formed Elektra Records label. Already a notable presence on the Greenwich Village folk scene as a guitarist and singer, she debuted on record in 1953 with the 10-inch albums Turkish And Spanish Folk Songs and Mexican Folk Songs. The albums were unusual in that Gooding sang the traditional material in the original language. She had learned the songs either through extant recordings or from visiting musicians, a process she documented in her scrupulously detailed sleeve notes. Gooding recorded several more albums for Elektra during the mid-50s, offering her tasteful interpretations of English and Italian folk songs and recording a duet album with Theodore Bikel. She also hosted the Folksingers Choice show on the New York radio station WBAI, which is where she interviewed a very young Bob Dylan in 1962.
