Biography
John Ray Sechler, 25 December 1919, China Grove, North Carolina, USA. (Also known as Curly Sechler.) In 1935, playing mandolin and singing, Seckler formed with his brothers the Yodeling Rangers. He sometimes recorded with guitarist and banjo player Charlie Cushman, Cranford Nix, played in Charlie Monroe’s band (1939) and joined Mac Wiseman’s Smokey Mountaineers in 1948. A year later, he was with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs’s Foggy Mountain Boys. He performed with the band for many years and his recorded work with them is notable for its exhilarating joie de vivre. The tightness of the ensemble passages and Sechler’s high tenor voice add an edge to the already exciting music. In the early 60s Seckler retired from the music business and started a trucking company. In 1973 he returned to playing and worked with Flatt and the Nashville Grass taking over as leader when Flatt died in 1979. The band continued with Willis Spears...
