Merylynn Cecelia Hecht, 3 July 1931, Freeport, Illinois, USA. As a small child Hale took piano lessons but at the age of eight became enamoured of the harp. She studied the instrument, playing classical and popular music of the day but gradually developed an interest in late-swing era music. In her late teens she went to California to study, played on television and was soon finding herself overwhelmed with offers of work. Amongst these jobs was one with a pianist just starting out, Liberace. Hales playing of the harp was of a very high order and during the 50s she was in great demand from television and film studios and worked in many bands backing popular artists of the day. Hale was offered work with several all-female bands but avoided this track as being demeaning to her skills as a musician.
