Illinois, USA. Stevens bought his first guitar, a second-hand acoustic, with the money his grandfather gave him from pawned fishing gear. By the age of 15, Stevens had learnt to play rhythm guitar and had begun to write songs for his band. He studied music at Southern Illinois University, including classical guitar. However, his extra-curricular activities focused on going out to bars and listening to blues bands. Stevens moved to Los Angeles, California in 1980. Instead of becoming an overnight chart sensation, Stevens spent 10 years teaching third grade at the L.A. Unified High School. This financed the purchase of a four-track and a drum-machine. Inspired by comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stevens worked hard to hone his talents. Outside of teaching, he played military bases up and down the Californian coast.
