Calvin Bellamy, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. This Milwaukee-based artist rose to prominence in 2001 as part of the new wave of Midwest rappers to break into the US mainstream charts. His unusual moniker is taken from a family nickname (Coo Coo) and a shortened version of his given name (Cal). He entered the music scene in the mid-90s, working as a DJ and MC with the local Stone Cold Crew. The rapper established In The Trunk Records to facilitate the release of his debut recording, 1995’s Game, but attempts to launch other artists on the label were less successful. Taking a break from his own label, Coo Coo Cal hooked up with Infinite Inquiry and released two well-received albums, Walkin’ Dead and Still Walkin’. His popularity in the Midwest inevitably led to offers from major labels, and by the new millennium Coo Coo Cal had signed a recording contract with Tommy Boy Records.
