Biography

30 May 1927, Denison, Texas, USA. Bryant began playing trumpet when her brother was away in the army and his instrument was available to her. She played in a school dance band and then in an all-female orchestra at Prairie View College in Houston, Texas. Later, she attended UCLA, then left music and education behind for a short time to work in domestic service. This quickly palled and she returned to playing trumpet, and sometimes drums, in and around Los Angeles. She accompanied singer Billy Daniels, and played in the Darlings Of Rhythm, an all-female band, and various other groups. In 1947, during Dizzy Gillespie’s engagement at Billy Berg’s club, where he was with Charlie Parker, Bryant heard the frequent broadcasts made from the club. Entranced by Gillespie’s playing, she redirected her musical career from this point onwards. However, marriage and the birth of her first child kept her from music for a couple of years, but she was soon active...
