6 September 1967, Wimbledon, London, England. In 1982, after spending 10 years at stage school, Martin became resident singer at the Savoy Hotel in Bournemouth. In 1987 she sang on cruise liners for Cunard, including the QE2. In 1990 she visited the USA where she studied with Marilyn J. Johnson in New York. In 1991 she returned to the UK to form her own band, playing many prestigious London jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s, the 100 Club and the Pizza On The Park, and also toured extensively. In 1992 she played a return engagement at Ronnie Scott’s and also appeared at the Glasgow and Sheffield Jazz Festivals. In addition to leading her own band, Martin has also worked regularly with Mick Hutton’s group, Straight Face, including Steve Argüelles and Iain Ballamy, with Ray Gelato’s Giants Of Jive, and with a free-music band led by John Stevens. She has also recorded with Bobby Wellins and Richard Rodney Bennett.
