Biography

Based in Birmingham, England, pop rock group City Boy started out as a four-piece acoustic folk band playing in the pubs and clubs of the Midlands in the early 70s. The original line-up was ‘Lol’ Lawrence Mason (vocals), Steve Broughton (guitar), Mike Slamer (guitar) and Max Thomas (guitar). They turned professional in 1975 and started writing their own songs (mainly the work of Broughton). Thomas took up keyboards in addition to guitar, and after being signed to Phonogram Records, they recruited Chris Dunn (bass) and Roger Kent (drums), who was soon replaced by Roy Ward. They had released several albums without success before they made a breakthrough in 1978 when ‘5-7-0-5’ made the UK Top 10. They had two more hits, including ‘The Day The Earth Caught Fire’. Dunn and Broughton were ejected from the band at this point after attempting to convince City Boy to concentrate on pop songs rather than progressive rock. Dunn managed Tight Fit...
