21 July 1932, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Hedges began playing clarinet at an early age and, despite his youth, showed a predilection for early jazz forms. He paid his dues working with some of the leading figures of an earlier age, among them Georg Brunis, Muggsy Spanier and Danny Alvin. In the 60s, he moved to Milwaukee where he joined the Dick Ruedebusch band, appearing with them on The Ed Sullivan Show and making many records. He has continued to make his home in Milwaukee, playing at local venues and also touring throughout the Midwest. His band, the Chicago Swingtet, held a weekly engagement at a Chicago nightspot, Andy’s, throughout the 90s. Hedges played with Wild Bill Davison in the USA and Europe and also, after the fiery cornetists death, with the Wild Bill Davison Legacy Band led by Tommy Saunders.
