Biography
Christopher Becker Whitley, 31 August 1960, Houston, Texas, USA, d. 20 November 2005, Houston, Texas, USA. A rootsy rock guitarist, who played slide guitar to his own dark romantic compositions, Whitleys career was spent on the margins of mainstream acceptance. In his youth Whitley was influenced by John Lee Hooker, Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters. Afterwards he began busking on the streets of New York, before trying to sound like Gary Numan with a dobro for most of the 80s. He then relocated to Belgium where he formed a band entitled A Noh Radio, in which he played guitar synthesizer. Eventually he returned to America and back to the busking circuit. However, with blues having come back into fashion, Whitley took up residency at the Exterminator Chili, a Mexican club, which resulted in management, publishing and record contracts.
