Christopher Scott Thile, 20 February 1981, Oceanside, California, USA. Interested in music from early childhood, Thile became adept on mandolin and guitar as well as several other related instruments. He played attracted considerable attention as a member of Nickel Creek, a progressive acoustic trio, the members of which had first met in 1989. The others were brother and sister Sean and Sara Watkins. At the time, Sean was aged 12 and Sara and Thile were seven. Unusually for musicians of this generation, Nickel Creek’s principal genre was contemporary bluegrass and they enjoyed considerable success at festivals. At the age of 12, Thile won the national mandolin championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Nickel Creek continued to meet with audience and critical acclaim as performing and recording artists. In 2006, the group announced their disbandment.
