Biography
1 January 1971, Chicago, Illinois, USA. A highly-gifted and forward looking player, Potter was raised in Columbia, South Carolina where he played piano before taking up both the tenor and alto saxophone. He began playing the local clubs when he was only 13, before moving to New York in 1989. Potter spent four years playing saxophone, and occasional piano, in Red Rodneys quintet, and graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1993. Potter played in a heavily bebop-influenced style during his time with Rodney but following the trumpeters death in 1994 he has expanded his musical horizons, demonstrating a refreshing sense of adventure in his exploration of harmony and odd melodic structures on several sessions as a leader.
