Formed in Espoo, Finland in 1993, this black/thrash metal band was originally named Inearthed by founding members Alexi Laiho (Markku Uula Aleksi Laiho, 8 April 1979, Espoo, Finland; vocals/guitar) and Jaska Raatikainen (b. 18 July 1979, Espoo, Finland; drums), later adding Henkka Blacksmith (b. Henri Samuli Seppälä, 2 July 1980, Espoo, Finland; bass), Alexander Kuoppala (b. 11 April 1974, Espoo, Finland; guitar) and original keyboard player Jani Pirisjoki, who was replaced in 1997 by Janne Wirman (b. 26 April 1979, Espoo, Finland). The band, all still in their teens at this stage, recorded two demos to little record company interest. By 1997, Laiho was also playing in the black metal band Thy Serpent, an arrangement that led to the Spinefarm label receiving a copy of Inearthed’s unfinished prospective debut album.
