Biography

10 June 1967, New York City, New York, USA. The bass-playing son of the noted free jazz drummer Charles Moffett, and the younger brother of singer Charisse, drummer Cody, trumpeter Mondre and tenor saxophonist Charles Jnr. Charnett started playing bass in the Moffett family band at the age of seven, appearing on their 1974 LRS session. Charnett studied at the Juilliard School of Music and was a member of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis’ quintet at the age of 16. Heavily in demand as a session musician, he has since played with a diverse range of musicians, including Charles Lowe, Arturo Sandoval, Slide Hampton, Mulgrew Miller, Sonny Sharrock, David Sanborn, Bette Midler and Anita Baker. He joined Ornette Coleman’s quartet in 1993, emulating his father who played a prominent part in the altoist’s mid-60s trio (Charnett’s name is a contraction of his father and Coleman’s first names).
