18 August 1896, Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA, d. 17 March 1958. After playing brass instruments and piano in various bands, Kunz led his own band while still in his early teens. He visited the UK in 1922 and decided to make his home there. He led bands through the late 20s and into the early 30s, enjoying residencies at several leading West End nightclubs. From one of these he was broadcast by the BBC and this helped spread his popularity. Later in his career he toured variety theatres and made many records, favouring medleys of popular tunes from present and past. Kunz played in a diluted form of stride and if he possessed a great technique, he skilfully concealed it from his many fans. Ill health dogged him in his later years and for some time he suffered from a form of arthritis which affected his hands and threatened to cut short his career. Having won that battle he finally succumbed to respiratory complaints and died in his sleep in March 1958.
